Definition:Ocular motility disorder can be due to extraocular muscle (EOM) lesions or lesions of brainstem, cerebral centers, or cranial nerves
What The Referring Physician Needs To Know- Two possible etiologies of noncomitant strabismus, neurologic and restrictive, can be distinguished by forced duction test
- Forced duction test shows no impediment to passive movement of eye with forceps when there is neurologic damage
- Forced duction test shows limitation on attempted movement of globe in restrictive disease of EOM
- Use of CT and MR imaging has improved understanding of many congenital and acquired conditions causing strabismus
- Results in more appropriate therapeutic intervention and gives insight into patho-physiology of conditions
- Sherrington law of reciprocal innervation: when agonist muscle contracts, antagonist muscle relaxes and lengthens
