  • Contrast esophagography is preferable to endoscopy because traumatic perforation may occur with the latter
  • Swelling of epiglottis indicates that ingested agent has reached hypopharynx and likely esophagus
  • Epithelial metaplasia (Barrett's esophagus) may occur, as may development of esophageal carcinoma later in adulthood
