Encephalomalacia (Trauma Sequelae)

Definition:Softening of brain tissue secondary to hemorrhagic contusion, infarction, or diffuse axonal injury
What The Referring Physician Needs To Know
  • Whole-brain atrophy may be seen even with mild to moderate traumatic brain injury several months after trauma
  • Injuries that cause loss of consciousness lead to greater atrophy
  • Wallerian degeneration may cause secondary atrophy of thalamus and brainstem by about 3 months after injury, in cases of widespread diffuse axonal injury
  • Thinning of corpus callosum indicates loss of crossing white matter tracts
