Nonmucinous Invasive Adenocarcinoma of Appendix, with Associated Inflammation Mimicking Appendicitis

Figure 4 : Coronal reformatted image shows nicely extent of soft tissue mass (arrow) and apparent appendicolith.

Findings

Axial contrast-enhanced CT scans show a soft tissue mass involving the appendix (Fig. 1) and associated calcification and involvement of entire appendix with inflammation (Fig. 2). Coronal reformatted images show nicely the extent of soft tissue mass and apparent appendicolith (Fig. 3 and Fig. 4). In retrospect, the appearance mimics appendicitis, but has a larger soft tissue mass component. The patient was suspected to have appendicitis based on her age and clinical presentation. The patient had initial surgery and subsequent right hemicolectomy. The tumor had involved the entire appendix with extension to the pericolonic tissue, but not the colon (T3N0).
