Pulmonary Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Figure 4 : Contrast-enhanced CT image reveals endobronchial tumor within the right main and upper lobe bronchi with mild distal atelectasis. The patient was a 54-year-old man with pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma.

Discussion

Peripheral tumors frequently cavitate (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, and Fig. 3). Central squamous cell carcinomas (Fig. 4) frequently result in bronchial obstruction, distal atelectasis and obstructive pneumonitis, hilar, and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Squamous cell carcinomas show increased uptake on Fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging.
